The Eye and Mind Laboratory for Visual and Multimodal Anthropology at Aarhus University’s Department of Anthropology hosts the Visual and Multimodal Anthropology MSc-Track. This program trains students to experiment with extra-textual research and dissemination strategies, design audiovisual projects, and apply audiovisual media as both a participatory research method and a tool for analytical investigation and expression.
Through hands-on workshops, students learn to use cameras, audio recorders, and digital tools for experimental fieldwork, participatory research, and cross-cultural analysis.
The lab also hosts an annual international summer school, where participants explore multimodal research methods and interdisciplinary collaboration. This course enables participants to think and operate beyond disciplinary boundaries within the social sciences, to critically reflect on epistemological aspects of knowledge-production, and to effectively communicate research findings across a variety of media.
Beyond the university, the Moesgaard Museum’s exhibition lab serves as a platform for students and researchers to present their work to the public. Each year, two exhibitions are showcased—one by BA students from the Knowledge Dissemination course, where they transform fieldwork into public displays with the help of museum experts, and another tied to ongoing research in anthropology or archaeology.
